College Grads. What to do After Finals

It’s the end of an era, you have officially completed your last college final and what an accomplishment that is! However, a big step in your life is approaching and the real world is calling your name. Here are a few things you should have complete (or in progress) by the time finals are over: 

Make an appointment at your local college career center

Take advantage of your local college career center advisors while their services are still at your fingertips. The advisors are there to help you prepare for interviews, edit and create a resume, resume writing tips, interview tips, cover letter generation and more.

Your resume

Essentially this document is your ticket to landing your dream job. It is the first impression upon your future employer. Staffing and Human Resources Professionals review hundreds of resumes a week and can identify a potential match or mismatch in a matter of seconds. HR professionals specialize in recruitment and sourcing, so it is in your best interest to create a proficient, well written resume to hand to your interviewer.

Tailor your resume towards the specific position you are seeking and emphasize certain certifications, technical skills, accomplishments, and of course include your GPA and major!

Follow up on previous interviews

By the time finals are over, and (hopefully) you’ve already interviewed with a company or two, it is in your best interest to follow up to express your interest in the position. It’s not too late! Buy a pack of Thank You notes and write a quick ‘Thank You’ to the person that interviewed you as a courtesy follow up and mail out. You’ll be surprised how far this will get you! Thank them for the opportunity to meet with him/her and relay your interest in the position.
